The common definition of a muscle car started out as a mid-size car with a big block engine. Since the earlier cars were full sized and heavier, they don't fit the criteria. The GTO used the mid-size Tempest body.
I've had a number of dual quad 409s, which were "nasty", but almost always lost the weight battle to the smaller cars.

The Polara's were mid sized car, and the Thunderbolt also was a mid sized car with a big engine. The GTO was hardly the first .Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

63 Plymouths and Dodges with the Super Stock II -426ci.Wedge engine 425 horsepower .Before that it was the 413ci.
63 Pontaic Catalinas with the 421 HO Tri Power 3-2s -370 horsepower-10.75 to 1 compression.( very conservative ratings)
The First Muscle cars , if thats what you want to call the cars from 64 GTOs on were bad,but its Super Stock big brothers were
Pretty Bad Too!
It's just like some of the "car magazines" of today. Some of the "journalist" are dipsh*ts with english majors and not real car guys.
Somebody pulled their head out of their *ss and happened to see the GTO and called it the firts muscle car .........without knowing or really caring what had already been built in previous years.
I work with some of those same type of individuals................... not journalist, but self proclamed experts that don't know sh*t about sh*t.
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
