this is an honest question, they have street drags Fri nites at a drag strip near us.My question is,with a 2500 lb car 450 hp, a built 700r4, 4:56 gears, tires are 31.5x18x15, MSD c/w rev limiter ,2500 stall and the kicker = "column shift" what gear would a guy race it in? Any tips would really appreciated, thanks in advance

.....from what I remember the 700R4's don't shift into overdrive at full throttle. So either Drive {3rd gear} or shift it manually 1,2,3....

I'd just dump it into drive and stand on it. It's an automatic, it was made to shift on it's own. You don't need to shift it, if u want to shift a tranny, go get a standard or a different valve body. You'll run the most consistant times when u try to push the throttle through the floor and let the tranny do its job.

I've never seen an non-manual shifting auto run faster when manul shifted. Just put it in drive and step on it.

The only reason to shift it manually would be if the transmission was not set up to shift at the right RPM for the motor, especially if it shifted too soon. Say the motor is built to turn 6500 and the trans shifts it a 5500. Then you would get better performance holding it in each gear until your shift point. Youo can do this with a column shift, but have to be careful not to move it too far.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!
