I think you will be fine with the 87, keep the headers capped and strip as much weight out of the car as possible. Spare tire, jack, passenger seat.

If I were going to spend any dough Spend it on some M/T drag radials.

Also since it is your first time don't make the same mistake I did. LOL

Don't wait for the light to turn green go on the second yellow.

Keeping in mind you probably have a 1.82 low gear in the trans, you'll get better results with small diameter wider rear tires. Stay out of the water, you don't need it. Most street radials get worse traction after you light them up. Air up the front tires for less rolling resistance, air down the rears till they try to wrinkle the side walls. Transfer the battery to the trunk, and start making runs. don't worry what anybody else runs until after you know what you can do. Don't let anybody get your goat and trick you into going for titles or anything like that without knowing what you are up against. There are lots of little ricers out there that can blow your doors off. Hank

No need for high octane or additives... Big reason for high octane is to avoid preignition (detonation) in high compression engines. Doesn't sound like that will be a problem here.

If you do want to spend some money spend it on some sticky tires. Have a blast man and let us know how it turns out for sure.

Really great info from all. Just wondering what gears your runniing> If you've got high gears 2:73 or in the lower 3's you won't have the jump on anyone, but if you have l0wer gears such as 3:55 or 3:73 ov even 4's. it will make a big difference getting out of the start if you don't burn your tires to much.
Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!
