what do ya think
well were hooked,my brother and i have now been discussing some kind of race car. i am leaning towards a econo bracket altered and here is the package i would look at.
vw front end, homemade frame and cage, narrowed t bucket steel body and a 9 inch rear end . for a engine i have a 74 454 block which i think we would put in a stroker crank, good rods and pistons. heads would be mild ported factory a hyd cam and comp around 11 to one if it work. rpm limit would be about 5500 rpm with the factory heads, run it through a powerglide with a 2500 rpm stall. put some 15 inch slicks on the back. i would hope we could get close to al least 500 hp out of the engine
we would aim for a 2100 lb car.
this might sound like kind of a wimpy package but we would be aiming more for super reliable et racing than a sheer out and out screamer
i would think this could run 11s all day long with very little stress on any portion of the car
am i out to lunch with something like this
i right now and running 13.5 s with a stock caddy 500 in a 3100 lb long wheelbase street bucket and have experienced some amazing drivetrain consistency . the driver is another matter but i have to work on that

with mild work a 454 two main block can make 500hp and can go to 6500 all day and with the stock heads if they are bigO ports with some work the stock stuff rods cast crank can take the rpm but good valve train is a must

I bet it gets deep into the 10's and weighs around 1500 to 1600 lbs. I ran a little Austin Bantam very similar to what you describe, with a Hilborn injected 301, and we were knocking on the 9's. That big block will be able to loaf along and not break parts very often. You have all the ingredients, big block torque, lots of traction, light weight, short wheelbase, etc.
Yep, will be a fun little car to campaign.

the enigne i have is a 4 bolt so even more bonus and as the stroker cranks are cheap i would like to get to that 500 cu inch area. this would be more of a stump puller than a screamer
would stock rods survive something like this or should one go to a stouter unit??

yes they can and have built many this is all i do is big blocks but if you go to a stroker crank i would go with a h beam rod or a I beam rods and you can get to 496 at 060 or 030 489 i have buit a dozen of 496 and four or so of the 489 and you can get a 4.375 crank in a stock block 513 cid with H beams. i am building one right now and a 496 with stock rods and hiper pistons and two 468 one with 7/16 rods and one with h beams and one 598 and just did a 548
