    69 flying dutchman down fall

here are a few pictures of the start and end of the 69 charger flying dutchman. al vanderwoude built and drove this car throughout 68 and 69. at the later part of 69 my dad earned his fuel license in it and bought the car from al. and then stripped the paint and campaigned the car as the sour grapes. and in 71 rebodied the same chassis in cuda form as the same sour grapes. ive got several pictures of the dutchman being stripped, that would in todays society of nastalga buffs, they would cringe at the sight of. it was a beautiful paint job to say the least. and during this time my dad also drove for al in the charger 3, the maverick, and the dutchman mustang, until a fire burned the lower portion of his body and decided to quit fuel racing and 2 years later go to alcohol funny car class.

Great pictures. BTW, the first body is a '68 not a '69.

    Thumbs up Memories..........

How cool........ I use to watch Al race in Santa Maria in the mid 60's at the old Dragstrip. He ran a Black 64-65 Dodge Dart funny car, 'If I remember right', with the roof cut off except the rear roof section left on. Seen him run many, many, times.

    Hmmmm.......24 hour's in a day......24 beer's in a case. Coincidence?..... I think not!.

    68 or 69

i thought all the 68's had round tail lights, here is the rear of the car. and also a 68 charger rear shot and a 69 charger rear shot.

True the '68's had round taillights and no bar in the center of the grill, but the easiest way to tell is the side courtesy lights. In '68 all Mopars had round side courtesy lights, they went to the rectangular style in '69.

    thans for the insight

i never looked at the side lights before and knew that. i think al vanderwoude had some inside help with his dodge bodies, i talked with his son donny thats my age last year about it, and like me he knew nothing about the inside scoop of the operation. but i think there has to be something there to get a body in late 67 early 68 with 68 side lights and 69 grill and tail section. and also he had the charger 3. it was a prototype. that never made the slate only the very short lived funny car and a toy model, and a scetch of the prototype.
