decibel level in a fuel car
i have searched the net for an acurate decibel level of a top fuel car for about an hour, and not gotten an acurate quote yet. ive read 95 db @ 3500 rpm under NO LOAD at 50 feet away, ive read 160 db from the 1000 foot mark from 120 feet away from an alcohol rail. but no reading from a true top fuel car from a trackside crew members perspective with the car launching under FULL LOAD. ive got a co-worker that thinks his car stereo is louder @ 172 db taken from the inside of the car. but he has never heard a fuel car to make his own opinion. me on the other hand have heard thousands of top fuel cars but not his stereo to be accurate either, any thoughts or real knowledge would be appreciated!!!!!

I'm not sure about decibel levels, but a couple of years ago or so NHRA invited some of the seismology people to Denver to check on readings. The guys were a little skeptical that their equipment would measure anything at all. They placed the equipment at the starting line and when a couple of Top Fuelers launched it registered somewhere around a 3 if memory serves me right.
The decibel question could be a good one for Mike Dunn.Ken Thomas

It has to be loud. Ask around some of us old fuel and alky guys how many can still hear at all. At least I can still read. I'm getting pretty good at reading lips....female especially41 Willys 350 sbc 6-71 blower t350, 9in, 4 link

i heard it was 3 on the scale also. Its got to be pretty high on the decible scale, the last time i went to gatornationals i was wearing ear protection that i used when shooting, and it was still too loud, i cant imagine how loud it is standing at the line.

a buddy's meter would only go 200db and it was there. the loudest point was when the car was about 30ft down track in front of us. we were standing at the rail so the car was only 6-7 ft from the side.

You can buy a dB meter for less than $75. I have one to make sure I don't get my home stereo too loud according to the city rules.

I'm quite sure Mike Dunn would know. But I would have to say that they are the loudest things I have ever heard. Much louder than any jet engine I've been around. I run a forums on NHRA racing, so maybe some of the guys on there know. www.DragChat.com Come in and join...it's free like this one.
