a copper head gasket and a steel and even a composit can be used over . have seen it done and i would not do.only on the copper . but had a customer re used his 1017 felpros over and over .the big thing would be to mark it on a v8 you want them going on the same bank .but on your 6 you should be ok .but if you cut the block deck or head or both buy a new head gasket .this is a big deal for me every engine i build i tru deck and mill the heads i just not that much .and i like them flat and smooth i turn the feed down very slow so i get them were i want the finshIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

pat i have reused head gaskets on a engine part way through the season but when i build a fresh or new engine i use a new gasket, i find that there is no gamble in reusing a head gasket if it is not damaged disassembling the engine ,on my high comp engine (11.4/1) i never had a head gasket problem. as for the blown engine i have now i reused the steel gasket twice with no failure, i do what to get a more reliable copper setup and get this setup to the point were it get fresh`n up at the end of each season with no damage. with a stock or mild street built slantsix if the head gasket looks good it can be reused.

yep like i said have seen it done just do not do it gaskets are not that much but if i was at the track i would do it. i have seen main rods and cam bearings come out of 1600+ hp blown engine and go in other engines and seen moly rings sets come out get reuse in fresh bore out engines. i just do not play this game . never said it could not be done i seen just about every thing that they say should not be doneIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Many thanks for your input, Terry and Pat. You're telling me just what I want to hear.
The stainless gasket goes back in the engine. If you two guys say it should be OK to re-use it, then that's plenty good enough for me.

blown slantsix
just another update, so far i have gone 11.40et @ 115.45mph with 1.54 60ft. i have the 2/600vac holleys the timing is locked at 15degs and i am using supreme gas and a water injection system. the car is working well but i am still having head gasket trouble. the steel gasket with adhesive/ sealant spray works longer than composite gaskets. i will have to o-ring the block over the winter it`s seem to be the only fix. the steel gasket is blowing in the water jacket and blowing coolant the composite gaskst would egg shape and blow into the lift bore area.she has come along way and getting close to what i want to run.

it`s been a long while but i feel after all the advise and input an update is needed. i`m still at it, i have the tune-up almost worked out.first the engine-slantsix is .080 over bore (3.48") the valves intake 1.70" ex 1.44" swirl polished stainless full port and polish, compression was drop to 7.5to 1, the carbs are 2x450holleys, block was o=ringed and huskey .042 cooper gasket.i removed the power valves and jetted carbs with #70`s and a cooling mist water injection, it really works. timing was locked at 20degs.started shifting at 5500rpm.i have finially been able to get some full passes. i put a camera in the car and now i think i am over geared looking at the video shift light i coming on at half track not before mph light,my best time with these changes is 11.52et@115mph,but the boost is climbing to 12psi, with the same blower drive ratio, this is puzzling i took the last two yrs to fix everything that i was having problems with and it was worth it ,the engine is strong and i now can make changes so i see improvements, i have 4.30`s instead of 4.88`s for this weekend i think this will help my et`s.will thanks to all . http://youtu.be/SuAe2t-WUaQ http://youtu.be/eSk5b_TJ-b8Last edited by terrylittlejohn; 09-23-2011 at 07:22 PM.

Good to hear from you,Terry! It's been a while.
I have wondered about your engine project. Thanks for the update.
I went to an estate sale a few weeks back and I looked in the garage because the notice about the sale mentioned tools. The good stuff was gone but there was an early slant six leaning against one wall. It obviously has not been torn down. I inquired about it and the lady in charge said "Take it, a scrap metal guy is coming to pick it up along with some other stuff".
I don't know anything about the engine. I really don't need it but I grabbed it anyway. I don't know if it is a 225 or a 170 but either way I'm excited about getting to play with it.
Keep us informed about the project.

you will have lot of fun with it, just look at the by-pass hose just under the thermstat housing, if it`s 3in long it`s a 225 or a 198 ,if it`s an inch it`s a 170. just check out slantsix.org lots of good info on slant mods , especially oilling to help oil pump gear, it`s the only weak point when racing slants. did you check out the video on you-tube?

will the season is over here. the weather was the pits. the track lost 5 of 9 weekends . i got the engine to stay together, no blown head gasket. i got a best of 11.52et, not as good as the 11.40et i ran with a freind 8"converter. the 2x450cfm holley`s seem to work, 60ft 1.52et , 115.74mph, i have the timing at 20degs with 600cc water injection.the plugs are hard to read, the water seems to clean them, the ground strap ring seem low on the bend put no signs of melting the tip. i have ngk 9`s they should be cold enough. slantsix walk around - YouTube here a walk around at the track, maybe a little more timing and water injection but thats for next year.thanks again

Good Job Terry - it's great to see your creativity and to follow your progress on the track. That's an awesome ride and to do what you've done in an "unconventional" way speaks volumes about you! I've never been around slant sixes, but you've certainly gained the respect of a lot of V8 guys and gals with the work you have put into this car and the results you have obtained. I won't be surprised to see you down around 11.20 when you get the track time to tune and tweak. Good on ya, eh?
You're "never-give-up" attitude is an encouragement to a lot of folks here.
