looked at the back of my new summit catalog,$236.99 for diaper that NHRA requires now on cars 9.99 and quicker,new rule for 2008,I race at IHRA track

Ever spent much time sitting in staging waiting to get the oil cleaned off the track, it's not a bad idea!!!!

Not quite true.
Super Pro, Pro and Sportsman E.T. racing down to 7.50:
Rule reads as follows:
"OIL RETENTION DEVICE
All vehicles permitted to utilize an NHRA-accepted lower engine oil-retention device. See General Regulations 1:8"
In other words, it is PERMITTED, not required down to 7.50. Some individual track officials are requiring it at 9.99, but it is not an NHRA rule.

Advanced ET rule reads:
"Advanced E.T. Racing 7.49 to 6.00
All vehicles running 7.49 or quicker must utilize an NHRA-accepted lower engine oil-retention device; may use a belly pan in lieuof a device attached to the engine. The bellypan must extend from framerail to framerail and extend forward of the harmonic damper and rearward to the rear engine plate and must incorporate a minimum 2-inch high lip on all sides. A nonflammable, oil-absorbent liner mandatory inside of retention device. See General Regulations 1:8"

You can use a SFI 7.1 or 7.2 diaper instead of the pan, but it must also have an oil-absorbent liner in it. All manufacturers who make the diaper can also furnish the liner. For those of you who wish to make a pan, I have been told that a product called Pig Mat will work as a nonflammable oil-absorbent material.

UPDATE:
Super Gas (9.90 index) and Super Comp (8.90 index) require a diaper if the car is being teched for Super Gas class racing or Super Comp class racing at an NHRA event. (Nationals, Divisionals, etc.) But if the car comes to your track for Friday Night drags (for instance), then it will be teched under E.T. rules, which don't require a diaper or pan until 7.49 ET. It gets confusing and in my opinion, the rules should state that if the car has a rollbar or rollcage, then a diaper or pan is mandatory. That would cover everything down to 11.49 and get it over with. No confusion. It's the 10 and 11 second cars that usually break and oil down the track anyway.

so it is just deceptive advertizing,NOT a rule,look at your summit catalog back cover,states sportsman cars must have one
