New season SpeedChannel filming of Drag Race High
If your like me, old enough to remember going to the drag races in High School and seeing the "Top Running" cars that were not completely covered with their sponsers logos, your going to love the new TV season of Drag Race High. Drag racing has never been the same since STP started their contingency sticker program in the 1960's and NHRA featured only their four "pro classes" on TV.
Basically two different High School auto shops agree to each build a drag car under a loose set of rules and not exceed their $10,000 cash budget. Now anything they can get sponsered free or build by the students is not charged against their total budget. I guess it's kind of like how much we tell our wife it cost to build our hot rods compared to the real cost, LOL. Like any good hot rodder the cars were both "way over the top" and had what looked like over $10K in just the "sponsered" paint jobs, LOL
I will not try to give all the details because I'll surely get it all wrong. But here's the basic's. The schools were located in North San Diego County, Ramona and Oceanside, CA. And over a period of twelve weeks they each built their cars and raced each other for the "best of five" match race this past weekend at Fontana's California Speedway. Both of the drivers have driven NHRA cars over 200 MPH and were recruited to drive the students race cars. One of the drivers Kris Laufler, actually graduated from the same school he agreed to drive. If you could imagine a high school football game with cheer leaders, bands, fight songs back and forth at a drag race with the stands packed, it was crazy and fun.
The show season will start in February '09 with Clay Millican and Cruz Pedregon as hosts. I watched as they filmed the TV advertising spots. If you enjoy drag racing, this is one not to miss.
Note: One car went 8.01 at over 175 MPH.

John, I watched the first season of Drag Race High and enjoyed it very much. It was great to see the kids involved in such a cool program, if they had something similar when I was in high school, I would still be there.....LOL Looking forward to the new season.

Thanks for the heads up on the show, John, caught the first one, thought it was great.... Our local track still runs a high school class, with points going to both the driver and the school they represent.... It's a good class, and sure does help generate interest in the sport with the younger crowd!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Will that be a relief from the many nauseous reruns of Pinks, Unique Whips, biker shows and some of the low rider crap? Most were ho hum the first time shown, but every week??? I hope so as Speed Channel seems to have lost its' way.
Which begs a question - why drifting?? I've watched a couple of shows - but why???? I see no point (but then maybe I too much of a PITA traditionalist)Dave W
