It was very organized, for the time. Drag racing has been a learning curve.......as cars blew up and wrecked they learned what rules needed to be put in place to make them safer and safer. But it will never be totally safe because of the nature of the beast.
Here are a few videos for you of what it was like.....

He's your neighbor?? Very cool. I bet you have had some very interesting conversations with him...........the stories he must be able to tell. I was just reading about the glass slipper the other night and the fact they ran it at Bonneville as well as the drags, and that it also went to the Oakland Roadster Show. Quite a history to that one.

Get him to tell you as many stories as you can cram in. Our hobby is rapidly losing so many of the great guys who started this whole thing that we need to try to preserve as much of it's history as we can. If you look at how many of these people we have lost in just the past couple of years, it is saddening. I would also see if he has pictures from back in the day and maybe he will let you have some duplicated for posterity.

Probably not too many videos of that era, kazmee.
Here's a thread on the subject started by Canadianal a few years back that may interest you:

In our area (North Central Texas) several local clubs got together and formed what we called "The North Texas Timing Association". Meets were organized by the association and races were held at Caddo Mills,Texas, at an abandoned WW2 military training facility. Miles of excellent concrete!.
In other areas organizations may have operated differently, but it worked for us.

Thank you Roger. .
