Thread: Kind Of A Drag

MoKan hosts the worlds greatest nostalgia drag race every year for pre muscle car stuff. I know that that doesn't help you out much but it's worth going to. I'm gonna do everything I can to get to it this year and that's like a 1500 mile trip for me.

Cool build! Just read through your thread. 60miles aint bad to go though. I raced more when I lived 80 miles away from the strip than I do now and its only 15 minutes away. I viewed the drive over the Cascades as a badge of honor. Nothing cooler than seeing a drag car making the trek to the track under its own power. Good luck and were all rooting for ya!

Heck, we tow 60 miles to our close track!!! Running at the 'good one' is 160 mile tow--each way.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

where I live is pretty much centered between Byron, Union Grove and where US 30 was---it used to take 1:35 to any of the three--of course though most times it was 6 hours away to Detroit,Kil Kare,Cincinaty,S Louis

Well, the brake lock is on and working. Now I loosened up something in the back spinning my street tires on the street. Dummy me. Hey, Mrs GW is here with me always! She comments by proxy
I got a new problem now. I got a leak at the pinion on my 8.5 10 bolt rear end. I could use a speedy sleeve and a new seal but they need to know what diameter the yoke is. Fat chance of me knowing that unless I take off the yoke and walk to the parts store. Would anyone know the Yoke diameter. It's a 30 spline pinion if that helps. Buying a new yoke is pricey at best.
I just read a tech section that says my rear can take an occasional drag but constant dragging's gonna break it. I either need to beef up parts or find a ford that's set up for GM coils.
The BIGGEST problem is money. I gotta fix things on the cheap. So far this rear of ours is not been cheap. Since we already changed the gears and locker I wonder if we should just try to beef this one up. I'm so confused.Got lots of chrome,
It's good for show,
But when I hit the gas,
The pig won't go!

That follows the theory I posed to you in that your only as good as the weakest link. And that weakest link will show it's self in short order.

The weakest link so far Gary is the cranius Maximas between my earholes for doing all this in the first place. I thought all you needed to drag with is something to haul a Chevy smallblock in. Parts usta be the cheapest and rear drive Chevys have always been contenders at the drags. Well, I still can't afford a drag car anyway and dangit I may break an axle driving 198 miles on 4.84 gears but I ain't quitting. I would hate to disappoint average Joe who raced over the Cascades. I'll run what I brung in spite of everything. Besides, if I was gonna quit I woulda decided that when they closed down KCIR, the pigs!
Ohyeah, having a helluva time fixing rear seal leak. I can't locate a repair sleeve for the pinion yoke and they want 300+ at least for a new Yoke at Advance Auto Farts. I could find a junkyard rear cheaper than that. So, I just pumped a quart of 90w in.
I did change the tranny mount with a urethane plastic one. Feels great! But sadly, no sticker for the car's rear bumper collection.
Mrs GW says to back off from the pretty flexible radiator hose on account of it costing 70 withtax. But I insist it may be the last upper radiator hose we'll ever buy!
Speed shop says u can race in Topuka with the hooptie but I dunno. May do MO-Kan first.
Thanks average joe for the encouragement. I think the Cascades should be turned into a road coarse.Got lots of chrome,
It's good for show,
But when I hit the gas,
The pig won't go!

A run what ya bung is something that is/came about for yrs bud.It is just we know so much more than those days yrs ago.
Maybe I have a point of view of heavy cars trying to much faster than you are breaking parts. That what happened to you was a part that needed to be replaced anyhow and had nothing to do with the line lock.
Dual purpose car like yours have been the back bone of drag racing forever.Hang in there.Good Bye

Want to add this.A important question you need to ask yourself and get to know. How much will stock parts take(what is the range over stock output) before they start to fail??.Don't think you have hooked the car hard enough yet.

Naww, I ain't hooked it hard enough yet Gary. Best thing we did was them dirt track race tires at 16 psi. Still some slip. Speed shop says stay away from slicks or I'll live to regret the day. Man! tranny mount helps even in street duty.
I was thinking of a stock truck 1/2 ton rear. Bigger axles, more splines and gear ratio better than 2.73. Might work in next phase. donnou, cant afford a ford now.
Yaknow, I been in that rear of mine intimately and I can't really see a weak spot. Must be though.Got lots of chrome,
It's good for show,
But when I hit the gas,
The pig won't go!

Yeah-that rear end issue letting go could have been just a coincidence.

Mrs GW says parts can break even going to the parts store. Makes sense. I'll fix it though.
MO-Kan dragway answered my e-mail! Looks good Said I can go to fun drags on Sunday after church and enter the bracket races and the "No-E" series. (No electronics) trouble is I got an MSD multi-spark ignition box. Might disqualify me. But I can reverse the electronics if I hafta. I'm so looking to the next year of drags. I'm as giddy as a schoolboy. I can't wait.
I think I wasted our money on the line lock. They say I can't use it during launch. Rats!Got lots of chrome,
It's good for show,
But when I hit the gas,
The pig won't go!

Most do use the line lock to heat up slicks in the burn box only.Good Bye
Thank you Roger. .
