What do you think about this cam in a 460 Ford?
Years ago I bought a brand new Chet Herbert cam for the 460 Ford I was building. I just traded the whole package to my Son Don in exchange for a 93 Mustang he had. Now he is going to build the engine.
Here is what he has planned:
1) It will be a drag car primarily, some limited street use.
2) Block is 30 over, align bored, decked, tanked, etc.
3) Crank and rods are Cobra Jet pieces that have been done.
4) Pistons will be forged in the 12 to 1 neighborhood.
5) Heads are up in the air yet. I gave him a set of built D8VE-A2A heads, SS valves, guide plates, screw in studs, Harlan Sharp roller rockers, and springs set up for over .700 lift. But, he may go with aluminum heads he says.
6) Transmission is a Jackson Racing C6 that they advertised good for 700 HP, and he will run a loose convertor, probably 3500-4000 stall.
7) Rear end gears in the 4:10 or deeper range
6) Capri is stripped and I would guess in the 2800 pound range.
Now for the cam. The one I bought is a Chet Herbert billet mechanical roller cam, H6G-112. I called them today to refresh my memory of what the specs are and they say,
Ground on 112 lobe centers, .698 intake lift .700 exhaust lift. 269 intake dur @ .50 and 275 ex dur @ .50. 305 adv intake 308 adv ex duration. RPM range 4000 to 7500.
What do you engine guys think of this combo and the cam?
Thanks,
Don

Hard to say without knowing the head specs, CR, squish and a lot of other things....gonna run any nitrous with it?? The Comet weighs 2550, ported and flowed Ford aluminum CJ heads (John Kasse version), 'glide, stalls at 3300. Cam has less duration, more lift.
Best cams we've found for the BBF's are custom ground at Comp to match the rest of the engine...Whenever building or freshening the engine, 1st call is to one of their techs.
Depends on whether he wants the optimal cam, or just something close....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
