What size slicks
Hey Guys,
I'm trying to decide which size slick to go with on my '66 Chevelle.
Currently I'm running 28 x 12.5 x 15 MT Street ET on a 15x8 rim. I am having a minimal amount of scrubbing, but nothing major.
I've about got the life out of these and looking to go with a staight race slick, and I was wondering if running a taller tire like a 29 x 9.0 x 15 would be any better (more surface) or would giving up the tire width hurt the traction?
Also does anyone know because of the taller tire if I need to be aware of any clearance problems.
Thanks for any suggestions.
James

It's obvious by both of your responses that you have not read my question.
I can't believe you are a senior member on this site.

Please do me a favor and don't respond.

Actually Streets gave you good advice. Get the tape measure out and see what difference 1/2 inch in tire radius is going to make clearance wise.
Some things that would be helpful to know to answer your question. How well are your present tires hooking up? Can you launch as hard as you want or do you have to hold back? Are you running a manual or automatic transmission? What suspension mods do you have?
Some thing for you to consider as you decide. Drag slicks come in many compounds, you will need to decide if you want a ultra soft high traction slick that will wear our sooner, or a harder one that will last longer. Straight slicks will probably "grow" more at high speed than the Street ET slicks do so they will actually end up slightly more than 29" tall at the top end. As for traction, there are stock eliminator cars running in the 10s in the quarter on 9 inch slicks, and with only bolt on traction bars so the right 9" slick will give you enough traction.
After measuring, as Streets suggested, the next step is contact the various tire companies and ask their advice on which one will work best on your car.
Now as for your exchange with Streets, you came on the board and asked a question and included a link that did not work. He proabably wanted to see a pic of your car to give you a good answer. He took the time to answer you and pointed out that the link didn't work and suggested you measure to see if the extra inch diameter would cause a problem. You on the other hand came back and blasted him. Seems to me you owe him an apology. If you took time to find out a little about him you would find out he has a wealth of experience on the drag strip and by the way, 7.50s are decent times for the 1/8th mile, Streets time were faster than that in the 1/4.
My advice to you: Show a little respect to the other members of this board, provide good, complete information in your questions, and you will get pretty good advice in people's answers.
PatOf course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

MY BROTHER HAD A 68 CHEVELLE THAT RAN A BEST OF 5.75@121MPH IN THE 1/8. I CAN TELL YOU THAT HE RAN 28-10.5-15 M/T SLICKS WITH 10LBS OF AIR AND NEVER SCRUBBED THE BODY! THAT WAS ENOUGH TIRE FOR HIM TO ALMOST KILL HIMSELF SO I THINK IT WOULD WORK FOR YOU JUST FINE!

Not enough info on the car to say much about the slicks. What motor, tranny, suspension, etc. Like Stu said, need to know a bit more. Oh, by the way, I'm a grumpy old man too.......Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

you should have no problem with that size tire..I had that size on my 69 Z28 and it's lowered in the rear...the questions is...what is your backspacing....

Tire height does play a big part in setting up your gearing for your car. You first need to know your torque curve, and where on it you plan to launch, in order to find that "sweet" spot.
It's almost impossible to give you anymore of an answer without more information from you on your tranny gearing, rear gears, engine torque, and horsepower.
Now as for Streets......he is one of the best minds on this site, he has a tendency to be short with people that ask questions that can't be answered from the information supplied. He is a senior member here and you should've shown him more respect than the remarks about him.Jim
