700 R4
I'm not sure where to post this, so bear with me.
I have a 700 R 4 tranny and the problem is that the 1-2 shift happens too soon, the 1-2 shift occurs at 1400 rpm under light to medium throttle and the 2-3 shift at 2800. I re-calibrated the governor so that at full throttle it shift after 7000 rpm and the 2-3 shift occurs at 4000 rpm and the 3-4 shift does the same, however the 1-2 shift still happens at 1400 rpm. Any ideas on the problem.
Any guesses appreciated.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.

I might add that a mis-adjusted TV cable can eat a transmission muy pronto. . .

Yeah ya need to adjust the cable, Its a very finicky adjustment and will kill the tranny if not right......

Right Viking, that is the very first place to start looking, however mine is set properly, thanks for that link and advice.
I think it is a stickie valve in the valve body, I am going to drop the pan today, while I have it off, I will also check my accumulator valve, they often wear out. SO I will install a new one and stack the other one, eliminating the spring. Could be the spring is broken, it is a common problem with these trannies.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.

I mean, you adjust it for hte carb in question - no mention of cam or carb tuning. As i slowly get my q-jet right, i am moving the powerband up the rev range and making to trans changes...just seems odd, as the vac type systems auto-adjust and change as the engine tune changes.Chris

. . . how it could eat a trannie is beyond me, unless it was WAY out of whack.

K, I installed a new filter, oil and pan gasket in the tranny and while I was in there, I removed the 1-2 valve and installed a stiffer spring. After having done so, I checked my T.V cable adjustment and set it once again, and the shifts take place at around 4000 rpm. So I removed the governor and re-calibrated it to an earlier shift setting, (heavier weights and heavier springs), and the net result,.... my 1-2 shift under light throttle now takes place at around 3,000 rpm, which also happens to be when my other shifts take place. I guess the 1-2 spring lost it’s tension.

Screamer, if someone was to install the T.V cable hook-up on the carb at a greater distance from the axis than reccommended, the line pressure is not great enough for the shift h.p. being delivered. Therefore, slippage occurs and fryes the clutches, metals, bands.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.
