Welllllll-----I personnally have never had one of my engines (or car) on a dyno---reason-there wasn't anything that had the ability to handle the horsepower/torque I was making---
Now these days--we do a lot of chassis dyno tuning, not only for the numbers, but to straighten out drivability issues---and then that is followed by extensive road tests--( Corey does the dyno tuning on the new NICKEY Camaros)

If you have one of those simulators - like the nascar guys - then you can get some tuning done but if you just clamp your ride to an inground machine and wail the snot out of it then you are deceiving yourself. When i do that kind of thing it is a before and after test to prove to a customer that the predicted outcome was achieved and that there are no leaks etc - in brief, i do it to cover myself more from a legal standpoint. My customer is impressed because of the 'attention to detail' the 'personal experience' the 'professionalism' blahblahblah but i had better know what the outcome will be before i clamp that thing down to the dyno.

I would highly doudt that a couple of Wail the Snot out of it for a couple of pulls on a dyno will give you more info that a couple runs at the drag strip---If you are road racing at a level where you absolutely need to know the hp/tq curves of your engine so as to plan shift points and intermediate gear ratio changes in your transmissions for particular corners/straights at specific tracks--the driveline LOSSES can be a help, but when someone is racing against a dial in??????you just need to be consistant----

While working at the Chevy engine plant in the dyno room,we where able to create ideal conditions for a output that by far where not real world and did so under the directions of the staff engineers.Dishonest??. You bet it was.Those are some of the old flywheel HP ratings you use today in fact.
