Can't remember exactly but it was slightly over 300 h.p. and fell in just under $2000 budget. This is the kicker. 318 chrysler, under $2000 budget. Most of the parts bought across the counter at the dealership.---349 H.P.

i dont belive it! i wont to see it on paper

just kidding that 349 sounds a little high though.

We need more info than you're giving. I think the 283 was the first production engine to produce 1 H.P. per cubic inch. 1957---- 283H.P. fuel injection 283cubic inch. Available in chevy or corvette

When my Dad died in 1989 he had a 74 Dodge dart swinger special 2dr. I had LT1S10 put dual exhaust on it. A couple years later I sold it to a guy that knew nothing about cars. He put an old 4bbl intake & carb on it off a 360.He took it to the strip and ran right at 15 seconds flat 96mph. I got to thinking, Hmm, 318 --- 060 over, purple cam,600 holley,headers,2400stahl,posi with a decent gear would suprise a lot of people No one ever thinks of a 318 as fast

well, I dont really know much about the 283. it was in the truck when i bought it and the guy i bought it from doesnt know anything about engines so he had somone else build it. I plan to tear into it when it warms up.

Cousin Richard should get a prize for knowing that GM's propaganda is wrong. '56 Chrysler 300B, standard 9.0 to 1 = 340hp, optional 10 to 1 = 355hp. Gotta love the almighty Hemi.

Atta-boys all around for Bob and Tech !!!!!! The almighty hemi can never be replaced as the all time hot rodders most cherished motor........ At least it's a very close second to the Blue Oval 427 SOHC... Just my opinion, of course.

Aw geez, Uncle Bob !!! You know I could never say something like that. Though I will say working on Dave T's '53 Chrysler Hemi car is a real hoot!!!! The engineering on the car is light years ahead of what anyone else was running back in the day. Those fellers at Chrysler really had their ship together. We are in the process now of lowering the suspension a tad, and updating to 4 wheel disc brakes. The power brakes on the car appear to be a hydro-vac style unit, and the power steering is a work of art!!!! I've had both '53 Fords and Mercs, but comparing them to the Chrysler is like comparing a box of rocks to a string of pearls......Which is a heck of a lot coming from a die hard blue oval guy like me.........

Gotta go now, Uncle Bob. It's 4:30 AM and time for all good insomniacs to be heading out to the shop to get some work done before the "day shift" shows up. Bring donuts if ya stop by this morning.........

Every year a insurance company prints out what muscle cars were stolen the most of the past year.

I always see chevys lead the pack, vette, then fords, then more chevys and fords, but..........wheres the mopars, my guess is that the thiefs cant keep them running long enough to be considered stolen, hehehehe.

Off the subject but since the slammin was beginning i thought it was nice to add.

Just kiddin guys but 349 horse is quite a bit for the little 318, i never knew there was fogger systems back then haha.

I remember the article and believe that I still have it in the basement somewhere. If we are talking about the same one, the 318 won the shoot out, but the numbers have long escaped me. I will try to look for it this weekend after I get off work.

I've been a GM ,mostly chevy man all my life, but I have to give chrysler and sometimes as bad as it hurts me,ford credit every now and then. I also remember articles where a 340 chrysler just flogged 350 chevys and 351 fords.Remember a 318 is to a 340 what a 327 is to a 350. It may be one of the most underrated motors ever.Although I have never built a chrysler motor I have been tempted to try it. When GM and Ford were not promoting racing at all Chrysler was publishing a mopar direct connection racing manual. It would tell you which Chrysler fit in which class the best, how to build it ,how to race it and which parts ro use with what. It would also tell you which K frames were interchangable. It may be the only thing that kept Chrysler going.During the 70s and early 80s I was a manager for the most successful Gm chain of franchises in the nation. We had the most successful car on the market, Cutless Supreme. Chrysler struggled. Now there is no Cutlass Supreme, Heck! there is no more Oldsmobile. Chrysler has done pretty good,GO FIGURE!

Rick ,I will look for the article as well, Im sure I still have it. thats why working on my car is so difficult. I never throw anything away so im tripping over myself in the garage. Like I said I have this vast knowledge of useless information . I know what the 302 and 318 results were and don't think I missed the 305 by more than 2hp. But the Chevy was deffinitely just over 300hp
