302 Ford, 305 chey, 318 chrysler Quiz
I have this vast knowledge of useless information in my head ,but cant remember anything important. There was an article I read over 10 years ago comparing these 3 motors . The object was to build a good little street engine on a budget of $2000. Each was charged to a well noted engine builder . I think the chevy was given to Grumpy Jenkins,The Chrysler given to Dick Landy ,and I can not remember who got the ford but he was well known as a ford man .They had to charge reasonable going shop rates for machine work and each was trying to achieve at least 300 H.P.I think they started out with a core. They had to buy intakes cams and carburators as well as all other rebuild parts. How do you think they fared? Who won? and how much horsepower do you think they achieved?

I left something very important out. It seams to me they had a max. compression ratio of 9.0 to 1 Maybe 9.5, no more.

Car Craft had done a few of these Big Three standoffs with different restrictions aswell. I'll have to dig up the buildups sometime and look them over.
Since it was about 10 years ago, tough to say. The 5.0 had been hot and heavy in the scene but still in it's infancy. I'm betting it was probably the SBC, at approx 310hp give or take a few.Dan Ouellette

I thought this would draw some interest , Guess I was wrong. Do You want to cut it off or let it go a while longer?

Remember ,They all had the same guidelines. 302 ford ------298H.P They had to go to a little bigger carb. to go over 300 h.p. and that made them go over the $2000 limit. 305 chevy----300 --302 H.P. Can't remember exactly but it was slightly over 300 h.p. and fell in just under $2000 budget. This is the kicker. 318 chrysler, under $2000 budget. Most of the parts bought across the counter at the dealership.---349 H.P.
