msd
I was checking my timing and found that my advance isn't working like it should. I have a good computer controlled distribuotor and was wandering what type of distribtor was needed for a MSD 6A.

the computer controlled unit was the one that was originally in the car. The one I have now was the one with the 79 van that the engine came out of. Would I be able to use the computer controlled one with the msd box and have it advance and do everything on it's own?

I'm not an expert on computer controlled distributors but for it to work I think you would need the computer control module from the van you got it out of.
You can actually use about any non computer controlled distrubutor with an msd box, you can even trigger the box with a points distributor if you want.

I'm wanting to use the distributor out of the 86 305 that was originally in it. Just about everything on the car was new or recently replaced except the motor. The motor had metal chunks falling out of it when I drained the oil.

cool that's what I'm looking for, does those msd boxes take care of the advance too? so I wouldn't have to run vaccum advance?

I'm really not sure.
I work on mostly racecars, where our timing is locked in at about 38*... no advance necessary! Sometimes we'll use MSD's starter retarders to make the engines easier to fire, but it's pretty rare. Call Summit's tech line, if they can't help you, they'll tell you who can.
