350 chevy buildup
my dad just replaced his 350 in his elco and ive decided its time for me to get into drag racing. this is the planned setup. i want to put it into an 80s model s-10 pickup but i need some advice on how to get some serious ponies out of this 350. ive built musclecars for show my whole life and i really want to get into bracket racing. my question. how do i get to 400 hp without spending too much.

alright chief. thanks for the reply. it wasnt much help but you made me realize that it will cost a pretty penny. i am just trying to find out how to do it for the lowest price possible. where do i start. i plan on having it bored over but dont know how far i can go to still keep it somewhat streetable. i also want to put a stroker kit on it but not sure who to look to for a street/strip 383 stroker kit. what kind of head work can i do and what heads do you recommend. im not completely dumbfounded on how to do this. just looking for some advise.70 chevy longbed project

Ok. I hear exactly where you are coming from because I have already done this. I have an 83 s10 with a 355 pushing about 500 at the crank. I have about 3000 or so in the motor. All of your power comes from your heads. The rest is just a good combination of cam and c.r. If you are looking for drag racing, you want a cam with a power band relative to your rear and final drive ratios. I have a cam that is in the 4000-8000rpm range. I also have 12:1 compression with aluminum heads to be able to use pump gas without a problem. Summit sells stock cranks for 200 bones that adequate for this horsepower range. A good set of rods are a good idea, but most stock chevy rods will support around 400hp. I could be here forever so if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I am also using a Richmond 6 speed ROD tranny so when i shift it drops the rpm to the 4000 rpm area which is the reason for the cam i chose. Hedman makes long tube headers for the s10s which i have and work very well. Transdapt makes the motormounts. The last thing i wanted to say was, the 383 is a bad idea for this truck. The truck doesn't weigh enough to be able to utilize the torque that this motor would put out and the loss of potential rpm. You would be able to wind the 350 out more and there is more than enough torque for this vehicle. I have beaten many 383's for this reason. Let me know if you have any ???'s
Thank you Roger. .
