starter problems
I have never gotten to do this before.
I have an 86 chevy, not stock at all. I am about to put in my 3rd starter in in 3 months. Not sure what is wrong. Found a plug wire sitting on the headers half burt through. would the voltage from this be able to burn up my starter or am I just silly.
This is my play truck please don't yell at me for not paying more attention under it's hood. I drive it hard and put it away really wet.

Are you running headers? You might need a heat shield.

starters from napa, do you think they are just giving bad starters. They work great for a few weeks and then they start to make a little noise, like they need to be shimmed until they just dont work any more. I tried to shim it but it just makes it worse. If the flex plate is cracked a new starter would sound just as bad wouldnt it? Is it possible that instead of shimming it I might need to go the other way and grind a little off? Thank you for your help on this.

I do not have heat shields. How close is too close? It is about 3 or 4 inches from the starter, I think, when it is light out I will look again. Would that make the grinding noise?
