Amc 401 Id?
Hi, I just bought a '64 Rambler that I want to swap a 401 motor into. I found a 78 Jeep wagoneer that has a motor but I don't know how to ID it to tell the difference betweeen a 304,360, or a 401 by looking at it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey rcerex. Welcome to the club! As for your 401 delemma, chances are its not a 401. The Wagoneers and Cherokees during that era most commonly came with a 360. If it is the stock motor, grab the vin# and run it through something like carfax. If your not sure, look for a large cast # in the block down near the starter, but thats always a pain. If you still cant get it, get back to meRight engine, Wrong Wheels

Thanks DRG, I saw three motors in Wagoneers/Cherokees and this one has a factory 4 barrel and a Turbo 400, so I thought that this one is a 401. The other one had a 2bbl carb and a sticker that said 360 on teh valve cover.

I also heard that you could tell a 401 by deciphering the riveted tag on the valve cover. Anyone know a link that can break teh code down?TIA
it's nice to have space, I just keep moving stuff to only move it again and again and again!
