ouch
I recently put a eldelbrock 650cfm on my 305 sb. well in the instalation, my fuel line clamp stripped out, to make a long story short big flames, and lots of water to put it out. I did not have my air cleaner on, and while putting it back together, the #5 plug have water in the end. I have got it to fire but the dang thing wil not idle. the carb is set to eldelbrok's 2 turns out for fuel and air and all the vaccum lines are plugged off. wd40 was used around the carb and intake and no leaks? any ideas on where to go from here?

Those flames probably roasted and melted all the plastic and rubber block off plugs for the vacume sorces on the carb, because from what you describe, you probably have an air leak that is leaning out the mixture and making it idle fast."aerodynamics are for people who cant build engines"

yea dude sounds like its toast.
if the fire got hot enough it could have melted internal parts in the edelbrock carb. like the float and some seals and bushings.
sounds like you'r going to have to start over, all because of a .50cent clamp. makes you want to punch something?
your not alone. just last spring . I was installing a new crank in my car and forgot to torque the rod bolts, only the mains, can you guess what happened when I started it up and brought the rpms to 2500? multi bangs , followed by a bunch of clanking sounds. when I heard this I jamed the pedal to the floor I was so pissed.Destroy your enemy by making him your friend. - Abraham Lincoln

was it running when the "lots of water " happened?
Pull your plugs & blow it out- water will not compress- take up the carb while the plugs are out & blow out the intake.
Rebuild your carb.
Buy new gaskets & an airfilter for the carb.
check plug wires & dist. wires for burns, replace if needed.
Buy new hose clamp.
Get a Vaccum gauge- you'll need it for Eldebrock carbs. 22lbs on constant side- > 8 on the dist. side during step-up.Last edited by hambiskit; 01-03-2006 at 12:05 AM.

no it was not running when the water hit it. I recently changed carbs to the old one to see it anything would happen.. is it possible that I could have melted the manifold gaskets? using wd 40 in the valley's the motor will continue to run. if not used will not idle at all. I plugged off all vaccum lines to elimnate a possible leak there.

Don't forget to go get a Halon fire extinguisher.
I've never heard of using WD 40 for detecting a vacuum leak...I've always used starting ether.

can you post any pictures of what damage the fire had done to your engine?
maybe by looking, someone may be able to point out something and help you out better.Destroy your enemy by making him your friend. - Abraham Lincoln
