From your bio, I guess you are working on a 350 Chevy, or at least another V8 Chevy. If so, number 1 is the drivers side front plug. Pull all the plugs, have someone tap the starter gently as you hold your thumb over the number one hole. You will keep telling them to tap until you feel compression pushing your thumb off the hole. At the same time, be looking at your damper for the timing mark, it should be in the vicinity of the pointer. Turn it slightly to get it lined up with the zero, and you now have TDC.Don........as long as I have projects to finish I can't die

I tried to respond, but keep getting a message the connection is refused, so I guess there is trouble with the site.
What your friends are telling you is that you are looking for the COMPRESSION stroke. How you find that is to plug the hole with the pad of your fingertip or thumb, and have someone keep tapping the starter. At times you will feel suction, but you are looking for air being blown out of the hole. This is telling you that the valves are closed, and your piston is on the way to the top of the compression stroke, Top Dead Center.
As you feel the compression continuing, look for the timing mark to be coming up toward the pointer. You can now rotate the crank until the mark is right on zero. Now look at your distributor rotor, with the cap off. Is it pointing right to the same plug wire that is going to number one? If so, you are timed enough to fire the engine, and then time it better once it is running.Don........as long as I have projects to finish I can't die

Yes, there is another way. When the timing mark on the balancer is at the TDC groove at Zero, you have one of two pistons at TDC on the compression stroke. Either it is #1 or #6.
With the valve covers off, the piston which is on the compression stroke will have both rockers doing nothing for a large part of a cycle of the engine whereas the piston which is on the exhaust/intake stroke will have both rockers on the move. Rotate the motor so that #1 piston’s valves/rockers are in the closed position and at TDC, drop your distributor into position, take note of where the rotor is pointing, and place your number one wire on the distributor close to that location. Then install the balance of the wires.
If you do not like where your rotor is pointing, you will have to rotate the oil pump drive to suit.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.

or you can use the starter relay with either a remote starter switch a wire with aligator clips, or even a screwdriver...just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
Merry Christmas ya'll
