    thick black stuff

I checked my oil the other day and on the front of the dip stick is the oil, which is brand new, and on the other side theres some thick black stuff. Can anybody give me and idea of what that might be? Id think it was oil except for it being brand new oil and its clear.

    thanx

engine sludge maybe? caused by running low on oil, too many miles on oil, or using certain types of oil.

It's very common on high milege, neglected motors to find an inch thich sludge stuck in the bottom of the pan.If you just bought the vehicle it could be other things though. But sludge doesn't mean the motor won't last a while.
Hey has that thing gotta Heme in it? No, it's a shevy not heme!

How about the dipstick tube, is it out of a high milage engine? The sludge could be in the tube.

    Break in lube maybe?
If I knew anything I'd be dangerous.

Brand new oil from Federated Auto Parts there for a while looked like used oil that you ran through a sock and rebottled.

well im the same one that has been having gas going into my oil pan and i was thinking that the gas is robbing the lube from the bearings and everything and maybe it was the break in lube like Gerald said. The rag is clean...
    Thanx,
