    Question How do you degree a cam?

     



    Not too experienced with using a degree wheel. I have a 11" degree kit from summit, jegs double roller timing chain with 9 keyway crank gear, and cam that says it would be 4 degrees advance at 108 centerline. All on 350 sbc.

    The cam is a lunati voodoo 1000-5500 rpm, .454/.468", 112 degrees lobe seperation, advertised duration 256/262, duration @.050" 213/219

    to be honest on something like that it really isnt worth all of the trouble of degreeing for the minimal gains in power you get if i was going to do anything i would advance the cam timing for bottom end torque or retard cam timing for more high rpm horse power check comp cams website they have an some articles that talk about degreeing

    I've got it advanced 2 degrees on the crank do you think that should be enough? On the card that came with the cam it says it would be 4 degrees advanced. Is that 4 degrees with the cam gear and the crank gear dot to dot?
    If I knew anything I'd be dangerous.

    I'm glad you raised this question, because this is one of the things I have never learned to do either. I always paid someone to do it for me because all that business of rotating it one way then the other and splitting the differences sort of confused me. I've read a few articles on it, but still wouldn't feel comfortable doing it on my own.

    Maybe some of our very knowledgable people on here, who do this on a regular basis would be kind enough to explain what we are trying to accomplish and how to get there. I'll bet alot of people would benefit from that.

    I've got a friend who has raced just about everything from 5 horses to 500 horses and he swears by it but I've never picked it up either. I bought a degree kit from summit and their directions suck but the comp cams website has some pretty useful information and pictures.
    If I knew anything I'd be dangerous.

    well i like to check them so i know it is rigth and how far it is off but you can spend alot of time doing this but the way i look at it is the first time i do not check one it will bite me in the a$$

    dot to dot alot of cams you be av 4 less it said somthing less on the cam card
