glass packs
Hey guys,
Finally getting to the fun stuff on my 58 chevy, wit da 235 6. So whats the deal with glass packs? good, bad, ugly? would they sound good with a dual exhaust set up with my split fenton headers? one reason i am attracted is because of the price. I am trying to convince my pops to go for the dualy's but our budget is so tight that i would have to be able to present him with some major benefit for little cost. Hes cool with the single so all i just need some saving tips on how to shorten the price gap between single and dual exhaust, thought these cheap glass packs might help-----any other ideas?
Thanks

TRY :
FLOWMASTER.COM,.. they have a sound board so you can hear different product lines,
One thing they dont offer is a sound board from INSIDE the vehicle .

Glasspacks are nice and sound great, but after awhile the fiberglass burns out an they become loud with a tinny sound. I have a couple of cherry bomb mufflers with 2" inlet and outlets that maybe have 10 miles on them. If you want I'll sell them to you for $15.00 each.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

In my opinion glasspacks are the way to go on inline 6's. I have a Thrush Magnum 2" O/D 31" long on my '51 Chevy 235, sounds great for being factory single exhaust, tho I will replace it with a smitty's glasspack muffler, I'v heard the 216-235's sound awsome with them and I'm doing a 50's era correct custom, and they were the hot ticket back then. I have a 2" O/D 24" long thrush magnum on my '67 Falcon, it's a 200 I6. the smitty's are $25 a peice, the Magnums are about $20-25 depending on what size and length you get. smitty's is only available in 2" x 24"You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Nothing sounds as good as a Stovebolt with split manifold and duals!

I may be alone in my opinion here, but you asked...I hate glasspacks. Jut for the record I know all glasspacks are not created equal and there are some out there that are not as bad as others. I can't give specifics on brands as I have never used them. I like the deep, quiet rumble of a solid muffler. That's really what it comes down to is what you as the owner like to hear. There's nothing wrong with glasspacks on a rod, but I think they take away from the natural hum of a built motor. It's not really work unless you'd rather be doing something else!

I think that putting the glasspacks on the 235 would be fine, as for putting them on something like a built v8 to cut costs... terrible idea. Search on google for "exhaust sound clips" i think its the first site that comes up is a forum where people post clips from thier cars for people to hear.

I'v heard 235's with glasspacks and with chambered mufflers, by far the glasspacks sound better. I have a video clip of a '40 Chevy I'll dig up, it runs a 235 w/ split manifold through smitty's glasspacks. or go to this site http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/tomsride.htm this is a 302 GMC but sounds almost the same as the '40 W/ smitty's.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

The dual Cherry Bombs on my '51 back in the day sounded really sweet. They never got to the place where they sounded tinny. Stovebolts weren't made to rumble . . . they were made to sing.Jack

I always liked the Purple Hornies....maybe thats why my hearing aint so good anymore.....couldn't be the years I spent on the line around jet engines without noise abatement....Sometimes NOW are the "good old days"...

Glasspacks are old technology, and do not offer near the performance potential of a modern chambered muffler. My experience with them is that they burn out too quick, and become a cop magnet.... They may sound "kewl" when you put them on, but after a full days driving they are nothing more then annoying.... Fast doesn't have to mean loud and obnoxious sounding anymore. I'd just as soon see all the ricers with the fart cans put up with the cop hassles for loud exhuast.... Give me a set of Flowmasters anyday. They cost more, but you usually get what you pay for....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
