Hey bro, that sounds like a problem I had also. This may or may be not the prob.. ok so my truck would run great at idle like yours. but when I started going, it ran like crap. poppin. etc.
So I went through all the possible things that could be wrong. but still couldnt figure it out. Timing was right on. At idle it ran great. So I seeked advice of a buddy of mine ben. hes a hotrodder/mechanic, and he said, hit it down the road let me listen to it. so i did. came back, he said, I know whats wrong with it. YOUR FUEL FILTER is plugged! thats what he told me, so I figured, hey Ill give it a try. changed it out, and now yes, it runs like a million bucks.
The reason it would idle perfect, was at low RPM the motor doesnt need a lot of fuel to keep the nice idle. But get on it, and it needs much more, and the plugged filter just cant output enough fuel.
Well, I definately hope this helps you out. give it a try

hey guys. when you set the points and you set them at ..017. when you took the feeler gauge out from between the points did you feel a slight drag or resistance? recheck the condencer. and i think that denny is right change out the dist after you check it. also i think (imo) that you need to check out the cam and the valve springs a little more(sounds weak) on the springs? still thinking and let us know how it's going. dave

hey. sorry i forgot to say that you have to reset the ppoints, they have to be 28-32. if you can, depending on the dist and the shape that it's in.

hey.(god it early.been up for awhile . one more thing then i'll leave you alone. after you check out the dist and just for s--t's and giggles try to set the points so that they read on the dwell side a little higher, say 34- 38 and try the motor just to see if the miss goes by by. just a thought good luck dave

    Hey Denny:
This probabby is a dumb question but here goes. If bushings are worn, will a Petronix conversion, points elimination kit, help? There is something going on with this distributor because I set the dwell to 30 deg with the cap off and I had very little gap. Boat ran the same. Reset points to .017 and I had 30 deg dwell. Have you ever used one of these Petronix conversion kits?
    thanks

hey guys. denny is right and you shouldent have no more then about 3-4 degree's in the shaft. and if you think that you are having a problem with the dist then swap it out w\ a hei model and try it out to see if the eng runs better.just make sure that you don't set the timming to high (no pinging) and let us know how i turns out dave

    Hello: Guys.
Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving.
I've ordered a new distributor. I was reading the back post and something occured to me. I did all the above changes but the only thing I didn't switch was the fuel pump. Could this be the problem?

This is why I said INVESTIGATE the carb, not swap the carb. You do not know if you are eliminating a problem or simply masking it once you go about parts swappin'.

suck, squeeze...bang, blow.....to get those 4 to work together when there is a problem can be very tough. Lots of good solid info here on a solution. I say get rid of the points and drop an hei into both engines, way easier system to use and alot less trouble than figuring out if the shafts worn on the old one. the slightest pin hole in a fuelpump diaphram can cause some of symptoms your having. might be a good idea to have fuel pressure guages after the pump and before the carb on both motors, possibly even adding an electric pump incase of a problem while on the water. please keep us updated.
