    Crate Motors

Hey, I've been lookin around at crate motors lately. I've found some good ones from GMPP, and more recently I was looking at Prestige High Performance Engines. I'm just curious if anyone's ever used them before, or what other companies are good to look for a crate engine. Thanks!

Maybe I am wrong but I have a problem with calling a rebuilt engine a "crate" engine. A crate engine originally suggested that the engine was bought new in a crate....now every rebuilder calls his product a "Crate motor"

My definition (in my dictionary): A crate engine is a motor that consists of 100% new components (including all castings) that is assembled by the manufacturer. The crate motor can be a long block or an entire engine assembly.

A rebuilt engine is a motor that contains components that were previously used. These components (such as the block and heads) have work done on them to make them suitable for reuse. The engine is not a new engine.

GM, Ford and Chrysler all sell "crate engines." Fred's Hot Tank Co. sells rebuilt engines. Fred's quality may exceed the quality of a new engine but it's still a rebuilt engine!! Just an opinion.
