gmc 305 ci v6 ideas
To make a long story short I was helping a buddy clean out his garage to make room for winter and ran across an engine that he nor I thought would ever had a use again a 64 gmc 305 v6, looks like a 409 or 348 with two cylinders missing. Since he owes me a few bucks and needs the space I am debating taking it off his hands but I don't know if this would be a cool motor to power my model A or not. I was set on the 351w/c4 combo I have but I remember this motor running straight pipes in a 65 chevy short bed he had just sounding excellent. The only reason this motor was pulled because not too many trannies could hold up behind it and cuz neither of us could find an auto flywheel for a glide to replace the the three speed, it led to its demise. Alos it had lost first gear long ago (even though the motor continued to torque off in 2nd gear for several months until he decided to do something about it) he switched in a v8 and glide. Now I am debating what I could used this motor with as far as trannies go wish I could find a flywheel for auto but I don't remember anything coming with this motor and an auto trans. I do have a truck 4spd with a long handle but the condition is unknown and I have a saginaw the inputs look the same as the busted three speed he still has but I am not an expert here. Any one have some suggestions on if this would be an okay swap.like a volvo with gun racks.....

ratty......though the GMC V-6 makes an excellent truck engine the weight and low RPM's of these engines doesn't make it a very good power plant for a rod...Their bellhousing will accept most any GM standard tranny and there were adapters for the two speed powerglide...The 305E and 351M for examples are probably some of the most reliable engines ever made..200,000 miles of hard use is not uncommon.....The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

thanks I was kinda thinking that too but the funny thing is the truck had 4.11's in it and the three speed and it seemed fine missing shifts and such since my buddy beat it sensless, I am more worried about my split wishbones and drop I beam front supporting its mass. I know this motor would need zero work has new gaskets tuneup and carb, I just figured it would be absolut low buck other than fabbing some type of speed way headers.like a volvo with gun racks.....

ratty, I think this engine would be very usefull if you have a boat. You probably wouldn't need to attach a trans unless it were a larger boat needing more weight to maintain anchorage.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I enjoy the humor, but I don't think they make a boat large enough or a winch big enough to reel it in.like a volvo with gun racks.....

Yeah maybe you think so but us REAL mechanics know whats good or bad......The best boat anchors were and are and always will be made by Ford Motor Company.!!!.......Just because the old 60 degree GMC V-6 doesn't fit in as hot rod engine doesn't mean it should be thrown overboard....Hey .!!....I was insulted so I'm just getting even......The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

thanks all, and streets for that gmc truck site is excellent. I am pretty sure this might be my choice since the olds 394 I was going to get has no good trans options. This seems like its the most different and low buck.like a volvo with gun racks.....

I was looking for a stick set up but the prices are up there on all of it even the adapters for turbo 350 or the modified case, I trying for low buck but different and low buck don't seem to be on the same pagelike a volvo with gun racks.....

Yep. And I seem to move 1 thing and it displaces something else with 1/2 of that landing on the workbench and then I forgot where I was going with this other thing and I'll see something else that...
