What is this?
yes, Denny, I realize that it is an old gym sock. Actually, I was referring to what kind of engine it is.
I guess I need to hear from somebody who knows about boats. You out there, Don?
A guy gave me an old fiberglass 17' (more or less) I/O boat which I dragged home and added to the piles of wreckage already here. The outdrive is missing as is the intake. I'm curious as to who manufactured the engine. It has the "Mercruiser" name on it.
It sort of looks like an older Ford four-banger that was in my tender care a few years back but I'm not at all sure that's what it is.
Whatever it is, I don't need it and I'll gladly give it to anybody in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who wants it badly enough to come get it. I don't have any idea what kind of shape it's in.
If anybody is interested, send me a PM and we'll figure something out.

It's a Chevy 4 banger Mercruiser and Penta had them made for their apps. If a guy's lucky it could be the 180 cuber. What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

Too bad we're so far apart. That would be a neat little track/lakes roadster motor. The rocker and side covers polish up purty too.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

That looks like a 140 hp merc cruser 4 banger ,had a 21 foot aluminum starcraft with one of those in it ,it may not be the 140 hp model .
I know the one I had was pretty stout for a 4 banger. Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Yep, the guys have called it right. Does it say 3 liter on the top of valve cover? If so it is a 180 cube, if not it might be a 153 cube. I had one that I picked up when I worked at the marina for another someday project. I was thinking like Uncle Bob (now THERE is a scarey thought ) that it would be great for a little track car. They have a standard sbc bellhousing bolt pattern, so you could go stick or automatic.
I finally got tired of tripping over it so I ebayed it. These things are built like a tank and perform pretty well too. I had one of these in two boats I owned and they are powerful little engines for what they are.
Don
BTW, I'm thinking late '70's to mid 80's because of the large starter. Later versions used a smaller gear reduction model. I also don't see any evidence of water ingestion into any of the intake or exhaust ports, so it probably isn't seized up or anything nasty.Last edited by Itoldyouso; 01-28-2008 at 03:49 PM.

Thanks for the enlightenment, guys.
If nobody around here wants it I'll stuff it in the barn with my other treasures.
Just about everything I ever got rid of I later found out I needed for something. This could be one of those things.

Thank you Roger. .
