window motor problems
I've had window motor problem in the drivers side door for years now. I paid Ford to replace the motor twice at the cost of over 4 hundred dollars. This is in an 89' Ford Bronco full size. Now the window is jammed again or the motor has gone out agian. I took it to Ford because I thought they might have some secret way to get the motor out of the door without chopping it up. Well since it got jammed again I decided to pull the door cover to find that the doors all cut up anyways. So, I figure I can't do any worse than they did considering that the darn thing is still messed up. Now I've checked the power to the motor and it has power. Does anyone know is there a reset switch on the motor? There is a locking nut and screw on top of the motor, what are these for? I haven't removed the motor yet. I would appreciate any help that I might recieve on my problem. Thanks.

window motors
Lock nut and screw adjuster.??.....How about drive gear back lash ......You have ventured into a very dangerous place my son....The window regulator on a hand operated system can be unforgiving let alone an electric one....BE CAREFUL !!!.......On the older vehicles with a wing window ..thats the first thing that has to come out...then the main glass....then the entire regulator..(scissor looking part).....ya then change the motor on the bench.... .....Frozen/missing/misaligned/ tract rollers.....missing/misaligned tract hardware.....felt runners galled up in the end tracts...foreign objects that have fallen into the regulator....and last but not least.......NO sign of lube ANYWHERE on ANYTHING.!!!!......It all puts too much strain on the already wimpy armature of the electric motor.... ......Just repaired a 1977 Ford T-Bird that the one of the mounting bolts for the rear tract was NEVER installed...It finally blew the rear roller off and let the window fall cattywhumpus into the door...Believe it or not FoMoCo still provided the rollers as a kit...I wonder how long a person at the factory lasts assembling doors....They are probably induced with some sort of mind numbing drug.!!!....The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

I dunno.. ....I were just guessing about the adjuster ......Interesting thing about FoMoCo.......Their vehicles had the lowest ratio in the window regulator with manual.....I've owned Ferds that took eight /ten full turns to get the stupid window down ....And then their electric's have the higest ratio. .....I mean supersonic.!!.....You really have to watch out while working on them..... ..What the....H...The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

OK, ford people, lets go for two, shall we? 87 ford Crown vic-I mean merq grand Marquis(Same stupid car) Driver side power window just spins the motor, and the window catches for about 1/10th of a minute every cycle. Towards the top, it wont even try to finsih closing it. The window can be pushed down manually. It skips, if you will. anyone have any ideas?Right engine, Wrong Wheels

Some of the 1980's window motors I have dealt with have a clutch set up type drive.....The idea is..when the window glass hits the top or bottom....the clutch gives to keep from frying the armature in the motor...Evidently the older motors (GM) anyhow ...had a thermal breaker inside the motor that prevented overload....Not sure.....never have had to go onto one.....But I do know the newer ones with the clutch are a big pain in the ass as they won't finish pushing the glass clear up or won't hold the glass up.....sooooo in your case I would say the clutch is the problem.....I can't give any tips on repair because I've not had any luck yet.....Find another motor or check on a reman........The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

Well thanks for every one's input. The motor was fried!Bought a new motor for 60 buck's with a life time warranty,took about 5 minutes to get it out, thank's to the ford mechanic's that cut the gapping hole's on the inside of the door the last time they replaced it and charged me two hundred buck's. That will be the last time they replace it.Love them life time warranty's and this new window motor acts like it's got N.O.S. on it, super fast!!!! Now I can hang my head out the window and druel on the paint job just like my puppy boxer does...hee hee heeLast edited by vara4; 01-05-2004 at 03:17 AM.

get the motor& regulator out, seperate motor from regulator, remove cover from gear side, pull gear out and you'll see whats wrong. should be 3 plastic drive pins about 5/16 in diameter but they'll be destroyed, go to your local parts store & buy a gear rebuild kit ($10-$15),regulator will be rivited to door grind the rivits out and when reassembleing use 1/4 pan heads & nuts be sure to Locktite em....
