    Setting lash cold/hot.

     



    I set the lash last night on the goat, and I was wondering what is going to have be done after the motor warms up. Should I re- lash it again?
    Crower Hyd. cam 60919, with Crower lifters. I did the 90 degree turn meathod. Turned the pushrods with my fingers slowly tightening the nut, until they would not spin anymore, then turned the nut 1/2 turn. then inserted the locks.
    This is not a roller set up, once the lifters get warm, is the lash going to be that off?
    Everything was a re-install, so they were already broken in. The lifters were never drained and the motor was fired this weekend, but I had some rattling, so I redid the lash. The first time, I set the lash on the engine stand.
    I am just learning as I go.

    The valves are too tight. The way to do the static adjustment is to jiggle the pushrods up and down and tighten the nut as you go until all the vertical play is removed, then tighten 1/2 turn more. Using the twist method, you have over-tightened them. And yes, the valves need to be re-adjusted with the motor warmed to operating temp and running.

    O.k. Thanks, But usually, after warm up, do you end up loosening or tightening?
    I am just learning as I go.

    For whatever reason, I usually end up about a half-turn tight. Your results may vary.

    O.K. Reset the lash as when push rods so they don't move/slide up or down anymore, then 1/2 turn tighten them, run engine and re adjust.....same manner as above.
    So in theory, setting them as just snug, is going to be correct after warm up?...in your case, of course.
    Is it dangerous to start it as is now, for warm up?
    I am just learning as I go.

    They should be redone after warm up always, It also makes a difference on how much readjusting is nessacary depending on, hydrolic or solid lifters, stamped steel or roller rockers, aluminum or iron heads. They all react differently to heat depending on the combo you use.

    Hey, I don’t want to steal anyone’s thread but what you guys are talking about could have been my problem. 350 engine four barrel 350 auto trans. I had to replace a head, when I did all that I read like Rugratman, I rotated until I felt it getting snug then the ½ turn extra. When I got it put back together it fired right away I was happy as a lark. This was in a 4x4 snowplow after awhile the truck would hardly run. If I’m hearing correct I could have had the adjustment too tight. I kept messing with the timing and finally gave up.
