Thread: Car starts itself

My starter recently started going out, so being that the alternator and battery were probably not in that great of shape either I replaced them all.

The car is a 33 Ford with a 350 Chev, I replaced the starter with the same model, replaced the 63amp three-wire alternator to a 100amp one & three wire alternator(hooked it up using the same three wire I disconnected). So today I got to buying a new battery, hook up the power cable and than the ground wire and the car starts starting itself you I quickly removed the ground cable.

Any idea on whats going on? Ive searched yahoo and haven't found anything relavent.

well if the stater hanging up in the fly wheel .short in your start switch or wiring. the start fork not in right making the solenoid live all the time. or you start wire hitting the main power post getting power all the time and by passing the ign switch

I think Pat hit it with the center cable connection somehow touching the little post on the left side. Either that, or your solenoid is defective and passing current all the time. Easy way to check, pull the little wire off that is on the left side of the big fat terminal and see if that kills it.

So I removed the wire that was connected to the left terminal on the starter and the car starts like normal and starts easy.

Actually, now reading my post to you, I told you to pull off the wrong wire. The one on the right of the big post is the trigger for the solenoid. When you turn the key to start, the power flows to it and kicks the starter. The one on the left goes to the coil + and provides a solid 12 volts to the coil to start the car quicker. Then when you release the key to the run position current flows through the resistor and a lower voltage runs the car.

Not sure what taking that left one off did.
