oval port head with rectangle port ram intake
hi guys i am new to all this but i was wanting some help on something i have a 79 datsun 280z with a big block 468 it is a pretty well built motor but it has oval ports and i put a edlebrock ram intake with rectangle ports on it with two holley 600 carbs i got it all put back together everything set up and now it smokes so bad you cant stand to drive it i was just wondering what causes this any help would be appreciated thank you

what intake gaskets did you use ? you need to use the rect port gaskets with a o port if the intake is rect port .heads sounds like your sucking oil out of the lifter valley intake is not sealing and that could be gaskets or the intake angle is off or needs to be fitted to the engine by cutting the intake or thicker intake gaskets or maybe thinner gaskets they come in 060 and 125 as well as carbs need work hard to say what you have going onIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

well it has rectangle gaskets on it and its pushing 7 psi on the fuel regulator thanks for the info though

but it is only blowing gas smoke out of the drivers side of the intake

well did you check that the intake did not bottom out on the china wall did you loos a power valve in the back carb . did you check the float s ??Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

well when i started and it backfired out of both carbs and they are brand new and when i screw the screws on both sides of the bowls it doesnt change anything at all even all the way out or in and thanks again

the fuel mixture screws i think thats what they are called and i dont think the intake is bottomed out

what size power valve do you have . how big is the cam @050Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

the power valves are factory size of a holley 600 cfm whatever size that is and not sure of the cam but i have a 2500 stall converter in it

well that is not much help you need to know some of this .but try starting with a 3.5or 4.5 power valves and make sure your not past the idle trans slot .then your idle circuit will not work. if you have the idle speed screws way in to run then in you could have a vacuum leak if not then ?Last edited by pat mccarthy; 06-27-2009 at 09:06 PM.
