If this is still about which engine we like, my choice is, of course, the 455 olds. Lots of torque, and they have a very strong bottom end, Thank you, good night.Right engine, Wrong Wheels

Techinspector; Could you please try to explain to her about compression..and combustion chamber sizes, and their relativity to horsepower? 1970 was the best year for the 500, after that the compression ratio dropped because of piston changes and in 1972 they changed the head design to a 120cc from a 72cc. The 500/472 heads were exactly the same...I don't know how else to explain this to her, I don't think she understands, maybe she needs a compression and horsepower chart. I'm banging myself in the head here.

No need to hurt youself, Hun. I don't quite understand wthe whys and what fors, but I do know that the 72CC heads have the best compression for the earlier blocks. According to my casting #s I have the 72cc heads. Also got that info from Max Torque. I also know that the earlier 500s had no drainage in the lifter valley. Already corrected on mine. I do know that the highest HP rating for my Monster motor was in 1971 were as after the Epa got their noses in it as wel as GM changed the way they rated horsepower. But I could always use more schoolin. That is what the Forums are here for, sharing right? Can you rebuild a Qjet without breaking a nail?

BowTie Girl: Here's a website for you to check with the charts on torque and horsepower as to different years of the 500/472 engines. You're right about this site, you can find a lot of information. And the drainage in the lifter valley wasn't a big deal in the earlier years because it was only paper thin casting that had to be knocked out or taken a die grinder to. In 1971, the horsepower dropped because of the piston change...went from 10 to 1 down to 8.5 to 1. And only 535 ft. lbs. of torque, and 365 horsepower..which my 1969 472 has 525 ft. lbs. of torque and 375 horsepower. So there isn't much difference. 1970 was the best year for the 500 by far.

Matt167; thanks for the info. I have another question for you! First the 727 torque flight is a good choice. But why the 440 engine.

I just have always loved those motors, just the way they are. The 6 pack is the best 440, It has a higher Hp rating than the 426 Hemi, although it was less thought of and cared for. My dad had 2 6 pack 440 cars. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Matt167; I also ran a 440 cross tunnel ran. I got the Intakes off a buddy, but it was too hard to keep the carbs in sequnce or timed together. So I went back to a single 4 barrel. Oh and the 400 can be punched out more then the 440. and you can put 455 olds Rod in it with some machine work and the 400 becomes a 470. I thought you might like to know that.

I diddn't know that u could convert a 400 to a 470. I still like the 440 as my favorite Mopar because of the 6 pack ( 3 2bbls ) and the legacy that continues on between them, meaning, Most evrybody knows someone or is related to someone who has or had a 440 car. I dont think you can say that about a 400 because it was not known for it's power. The 440 was most thought after ( to the general public ) rich people got Hemi cars. Many kids know about 440's 426 Hemi's but do not know about the wedges or the other Mopars. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Matt167;I've never really cared about what every one else thought,I wanted the car that was going to win street races. I also had a 67 mustang with a mexican style 302 boss, that thing would have chewed up that charger and spit it out. that car was so fast it got scary. It's just like these guys around here tell you,got to keep the weight way down, and you will have a fast car. If it's running good. VegasLast edited by vara4; 02-09-2004 at 10:08 AM.
