Some 396 would bore to 4.250, have your block sonic checked to see if it will go. If memory serves me LS6's used open chamber heads, your 68 396 will have closed chamber heads. New heads would be needed with the LS6 pistons.Buying parts I don't need, with money I don't have, to impress people I don't like

I'd buy new pistons if your set on building your 396. It's a lot of work and money for a good rebuild; 40 year old pistons might prove to be a weak link in the finished product.

some of the older 396 could be bored out to 4.250 .but not the 1970 396 block the 65/67 blocks some could .I would not worry much about the pistons i would worry more about boring a thin wall 396 block to 4.250 and then a 454 crank $$$$$$$$ i have bored some 396/402 past 68 they started getting thin on the bores. if you want a LS6 buy a 454 blockLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-04-2009 at 04:03 PM.
