454ci exchange problem
I have a 1985 454ci c30 chevy truck. The engine is begining to spin a rod. I bought 454 engine in Wesconsin last week and when I got it home and looked up the engine casting number it came up as 10114182, so it turns out to be a 1992 454ci tall deck engine that was fuel injected. I want to put a manifold on it that supports a carb. I know the 85 manifold will not work without spacers. I am trying to avoid using the spacers. My question is will
a manifold from a early model top deck work on the 1992. I know i have to replace the flywheel and clutch assemply because of the diferent bolt pattern and I will need an electric fuel pump. Im thinking maybe a Holly blue will do. Can I expect any more expensive surprises. I was planing on just a quick engine exchange. not.

they never made a tall deck 454????????? a 366 or 427 tall deck intake i think the thermostat housing is not the same as car and truck that they used on 9.800 blocks.it can work but there is some things that are not the same as a 9.800 block if thats what you had in it ? all the pulleys are not going to work the damper on the tall deck is not the same. dist is not the same .water pump .some of your air and power stuff may need to be rework . yup have jerry build you a hyper piston cast steel crank 489/496 short block or long block from a 9.800 block you will have some grunt and every thing will bolt up and fit .as for a intake for a tall deck plates they are no big deal i used many of them and there is intake s thats use no plates for the 10.200 deck block . you will have to look around i know they make them in O port but not sure any one makes them in a dual plane for a 10.200 deckLast edited by pat mccarthy; 07-14-2010 at 07:14 PM.

I believe you will also have to have a longer distributor for the tall deck engine.

yep the first thing i listed .but this is not allways the rule if you used a MSDwith a slip collar or make up a slip collar with some ez machine work or buy a intake that can use the 9.800 distributor or if the intake has a thick deck you can spot face the dist well .i done all of themIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip
