Thanks guys for all the info. We have a pretty good industrial supply house here, I am going to check with them for the stones. I am watching a ring filer on Ebay right now, and might try to win that one.

The ring filer I was watching on Ebay is starting to climb to the point I just decided to buy a new one. I went with the one Steve in England suggested, Speedway Motors. I had to order some rear shock mounts and other stuff anyway, their price was only $ 39.95 and it looks just about like every other one, so I pulled the trigger.

It should be here Monday, so we can get started doing his rings after that. I appreciate all the suggestions on balancing and putting the engine together.

Don a free organizer for pistons & rod assemblies that is 100% will not damage is the 8 pack crates used to 2LT pop bottles.Around here you can go to your local grocery store and ask them for one. Most of the time when you tell them what you want to use it for, they will give you one.I number on the side of it the cylinder that piston/rod goes into just like it would be on the engine.

You didn't spring for that $279 battery powered version??

Keep us up to date on how it works - the only ring filer I ever used was a new fine cut Nicholson file

With my build,I had the machine shop set the ring gap and I do have a ring grinder that I could use from the race shop and know how to use it.I am just follow the process in the build of having as many unconnected companies people's eyes put this together for accountability.Check and balances.

They work good Don, mine has done around 30 engines and is still sharp, just go easy as they can remove to much very easily.

Some thing worth knowing is Tony at Ross Racing engines, Tony is a Rocket guru and has become a good friend since i've been dealing with him, He is a wealth of free knowledge where Olds Rockets are concerned.

I've never liked borrowing tools, especially from someone who earns their living with them. When I worked at the body shop I kept a tool box there, even though I didn't work on cars as part of my job. But if the occasion came up where I had to tighten something for a customer, or whatever, I didn't have to ask one of the bodymen for a tool. The guy who has the repair shop down the way from our shop has offered me an odd tool occasionally, and I have always made sure I get it right back to him and show him me putting it back in his toolbox. But even then I never felt great taking a tool that he offered.
