mystery engine
numbers on block passenger side by water pump: VO8215MA Mercruiser numbers
A371027. Can't seem to find out what this is. there is a casting number on the driver side rear above the flywheel and behind the intake manifold that says its a 5.0 liter. I was told it's a 305 and i"m using it o repower my boat. HELP

5MA is listed as a 1985 Mercury 305 2 bolt main block

Mike is right. There still should be some numbers on the area right by the distributor and on the pad on the passengers side head area on the front of the block. It is simply a generic Chevy 305 that Mercruiser ordered marinized with special head gaskets, freeze plugs and sometimes a cam profile.

Some Mercruiser (Chevy) engines were reverse rotation and ran the opposite direction for twin engine applications. The reverse rotation of one engine cancelled the torque effect of the other. The cams were different too, to allow the backwards spin of the crankshaft.
