SBC Identification
Hi guys, i just bought a 350 chev engine that i am looking at putting in my studebaker. i have been trying out as much about it as i can IE: year it was built, what car or truck it came out of and so on. The casting numbers and identifers are- CFD, 401020, 190. The block number is VQ716FMC and from what i can see from the partial vin under the engine number it is 11206347- that last number may be a little wrong its pretty worn. If anybody can help me out with information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joel

Take some carb cleaner and clean off the block casting numbers above the flywheel real good. Then take some chalk and rub it over the numbers and wipe the chalk off and those numbers will pop right out so you can read them.Good Bye

IF the letter code stamped on the front pad is FMC, this block is either:
1985 350CI 165 hp LS-9 700R4 trans 4bbl carb VIN L in a 10, 20, or 30 series with Cal emissions
OR (probably not)
1997 255hp EXPORT L-31 (Vortec) manual trans CK20 or CK30 VIN R
Thank you Roger. .
