Glenn----I know exactly what you meant and my reply was just so some others that come along speed reading this in 4 or 5 years don't assume that the 283 don't rev--
A lot of the engines (283 based) that I have built were .030 over for 287 inches and ran D Gas--lots in Vegas and Monzas altho some were in Corvettes except the stock engine mounting there exceeded the 10% rule--- they used to be the iron angled plug 2.02 heads with 5/16 manley long valves, vasco jet springs and angle milled around 3/16 inch----roller cams, rev kit springs on top of the rollers and they were typically shifted (Doug Nash 5 speeds) at 10,000 plus revs.
Until they went to the bracket classes---they were the rulers of weight/cubic inch class--now you need a turbo 4 cylinder to get the weight breaks!!!

Thanks for the PM----you might want to take a look see at the vortec heads that came out around 96----Scroggin Dickey made up some intake manifolds for them that work very good with a carb---and in todays world I would use a hydraulic roller cam set unless you want the solid lifter cluick.
The original heads don't work well with unleaded gas on the soft iron seats--late heads have induction hardened ex seatsLast edited by jerry clayton; 07-18-2012 at 08:14 PM.

yep last 283 did i had a custom cam ground to my specs by Erson and the v tech head sound s good look at the 620 head it seams i seen more 906s heads cracked but that just may be the luck of the draw ..you will have to mill abit off them or look at RHS head i use this head some times over all very nice i think you may get it in a smaller chamber ? you will not need to put seats in them heads. for any gas issue. but not a big deal. if you want to keep number heads . putting seats in is not that bad of a job on iron heads there fun to do . long as the casting you have are sound . if numbers are not big deal then look in to the vteck heads or RHS . even if you go hyd roller do not think it will be quiet they can make some valve train sound. as for the vortec 305? i done many 350s but 5 years ago i did a 96 305 that had heads that was a vortec ? you may want to look in to this as it looks like a 58 cc chamber head ? last numbers 520? Engine Quest sell.s a real vortec head ch305a head with a 58 cc chamber . you may want to use this head. i have used some of there stuff there chevy heads are not to badLast edited by pat mccarthy; 07-18-2012 at 11:15 PM.
