Running Hot
Just installed dual quad, radical cam, headers and new ignition on a chevy 350 bored out 60 over and an electric fan
I am wanting to know if I switch out the thermostat to one that opens around 160 degrees if that will help my cooling prob.
It is running around 217 degrees at red lights.

Most electric fans have an adjustment for the fan to come on when your engine reaches a certain degree. On my 37 chevy, I don't have a mechanical fan and have two electric fans mounted in front of my radiator and when I sit ideling for any amount of time the fan is set to go on at 180 degrees or if I wanted to I could set it at 200 or 160.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

160 degree stat won't change a thing, If ya got a 195 in it and its workin proper that means its wide open at 195, A 350 bored 60 over is gonna run a little hot, I don't like a motor specially mine to run over 180-190, But apparentley the auto makers seem to think it's o.k. as most all of em turn the electric fans on at 226-228
In your case I think I'd be lookin at a more efficient radiator such as a Griiffen aluminum......

The more you bore out an engine, the hotter they usually run.
I had the same problem with a engine I had built. Put in a 160 thermostat electric fan and nothing worked, still ran hot. Then a friend told me about water restrictors instead of thermostats. The restrictor just slows down the water instead of stopping it. They usually come in a set of three differant sizes from the speed shop. That was the only thing I found that would cool that over bored engine. They look like big flat washers, with differant size holes in the middle of them. Hope this helps you.

When I bought the car 6 weeks ago it was running a stock intake with a quadrajet. when we tore it down to mdify whe found out it was bored out.
The temp never went over 210. with the stock set up.
I just bolted on all of the extras this past week.
Thinking I should just take out the Thermostat, and if this works to just spend the money on a new 4 core radiator
Any Thoughts?
Thanks
Sorry for the silly questions. but I am really loving this new hobby.

dont stop at red lights...that should fix your problem !
or you could check to see if the air damper has been removed from under the car.also you may want to step up to a stronger fan..not bigger, good luckLast edited by chadjones99; 08-02-2004 at 11:38 PM.
