283 woes
I am still having trouble with my jeep. Quick review, been sitting for 20 or so years before I got it. drained the oil, gas, new plugs, wires, filters, carb overhaul, points, condenser, cap/rotor, new oil, gas. Still when I go to start it it tries to catch but will not keep running. It acts like it is going to run but when I give it some throttle after it catches it then dies. Someone earlier stated maybe there is still some bad gas. Could this be the problem?? I am going to get some starter spray and try some fresh gas directly in the carb and see if that works..Any other suggestions?? also to be sure, does anyone know the gap set on 283 points?? Thanks..Paul

did you check you fuel lines from gas tank to fuel pump. you may have a clog. Is your fuel pump puming fuel? These are some things I would look at first.. take your line off of the carb put it into a clear plastic container.. ( I use a skippy peanut butter jar) while you hold the line in the container have a friend crank it over see if fuel is coming out, see if it looks clean...
JonneyIf it won't go, force it... If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway

If you look into the carb and open the throttle, does it sqirt fuel ? Do you have a compression tester ? You may have some valves stuck open. You can also pull the covers and check. If stuck get some lube spray and try to spay the valve stems and tap the top of the stem with a hammer with the rocker off. Not to hard. You should get a good bounce. I know this sound like a back yard way of doing things, but I have had to do this when I find an old girl thats been sitting for a bunch of years.

If you're going to be dumping gas directly in the carb, keep the fire extinguisher handy, too !!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

fuel pump works pretty well, it is electric and spits out a decent amount of fuel. when I drained the tank I just turned on the fuel pump until there was no more gas coming out. Is this good enough? I havn't had a chance to try the starter fluid. I am also going to disconnect the fuel line from the pump, drain the carb and use fresh fuel to refill the carb, see if that works. what do you think? and yes, fuel squirts out of the carb when you pump it, and i checked for spark, there is spark going to the cylinders. By the way, what do you mean by bleed down? Wont the car still run with a carb full of fuel even if the fuel pump is not on?Last edited by md85; 08-24-2004 at 12:23 PM.

it should till you burn out the gas you poured in. If the filters are clogged it will starve it out.Last edited by hambiskit; 08-24-2004 at 04:51 PM.
