cam help
Hey guys hows it going? I am still building my 396 and I gonig to purchase one of those comp cams k kits but I"m still stuck on teh size I want. Iwas looking at either the 292h or the 305h. I keep hearing that the 305h would be to radical for my big block but I love the idle of big cams. my cousin just recently put the 292h in his car and it sounds good but i would still like arougher idle and would love to out do him. Im a young guy so me and my cousin are real competitive. anyways could i put either one in my carLast edited by JEQ; 09-12-2004 at 09:40 PM.

Not enough information, JEQ. All we know is that it's a Chevy 396. Which one? Original HP rating?
Cams don't stand alone. They need to be matched with the carb, intake manifold, heads (including valve size and compression ratio), exhaust system, transmission and gearing. If you get a mismatch, you end up with less performance rather than more.
Talk to Comp Cams. Tell them exactly what you have. Ask what the 305 will do in that setup.

Hey Jeq! What's in you engine, and how do you want to out do your causin, performance wise or idle wise, if racing and you have the right parts in your engine and your vehicle. 292 is a very good cam I use it all the time, once again for racing keep a widw lobe separation 112 or above. if you want good idle radical and fast lobe separation of 110 or below (108) is what you want. Hope that helps

Still I think the best advice on cam selection is to fill out the tech sheet the cam manufacturers have completely and accurately, let them tell you what their recomendation is. These guys design, test, and build cams for a living. Probably way more accurate method of cam selection.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Well the hp rating is 350. I am using the 10 to 1 pistons and i took the heads to the machine shop to have them resrfaced and the valves reseated and ime waiting on the valve springs that come with eithe kit. I bougt a performer rpm intake and hae a 750 holly. I have some shorty headers with 1 3/4 primary tubing. I am going to get a 11" torque converter and eventually have my reareend rebuilt butt right now money is tight. Iwant this to perform good so if we ever end upin the back roads with a long straight away you know what i mean
