If you want something different, how about a 500 cu in Cadillac? They make a ton of torque, they are lighter than a big block Chevy and they are pretty cheap. The thing to do is find a complete car. 75-76 full size Cadillacs had them as did 70-76 Eldorados. You could put one in there completely stock and it would move that Chevy pretty well. Check out the folks at www.500cid.com for more info and details they have an excellent message board there with helpful folks also. If you get into one cheap then you will have more money to spend on the rest of the car, and then when your money is right you can swap out to something different if you decide you don't like the Caddy.
If you decide to go with the BBC, look in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. They put a lot more of them in trucks than they did in cars.
