i was just wondering how they determine the size of blowers? i know theres 671 871 1071 1271 and 1471 blowers but how are they sized and i also heard that you can boost your psi bu changing your pully sizes....what would be a good blower for a 454

454 would be nice with a 8- 71, generally, if you look at like summit racing and the blowers they offer, the 6-71's are listed for small block and 8-71's for big block, although I have never owned a blown motor, it would seem to me that the 6 -71 and the 8-71 are more of a street freindly blower and the 12-71 and 14-71's are more for a competition/ off road use application.

    Nothing wrong with a 6-71 on a 454.

Our 21' ski boat has a 4 bolt Gen IV 454, 7.0:1 CR, rectangular port iron heads and what would be a fairy radical cam in a NA motor. We run a Delrin ribbed Littlefield 6-71 on it under an Enderle Bug Catcher with an EFI spacer. It idles like a little old ladys' Buick, starts within 1 turn of the crank, and I never have to wrench on it. The pullies are set to 5% under which gives us around 7-8lbs of manifold boost.

If I wanted more than 700hp I might want to upgrade to an 8-71 to avoid saturating the blower, but I'm happy where it's at right now. A Roots blower is nearly magical, I can't imagine building such trouble free, well behaved horsepower any other way.

I would recommend using a blower set up by a known shop, not too sure about those Weiand things that Summit sells.

    Regards, Mark

the size is determined by the amount of air it can pump. the bigger the blower the more air it will move. the 4 and 6-71 blowers was built to pump enought air to run a 4 or 6 cylinder motor with 71 cu. in. per cylinder. so say a 6 x 71 = 426 cu. in. or 8 x 71= 568 cu. in. you increase or decrease the amount of boost with the size of the pulley. you need the bigger blowers when you get into the higher rpms
