[B]on a 350 chev. motor, you are installing a timing chain, what cylinder is at TDC when the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are dot to dot ?
when the timing marks are in alignment and closest together, the # 6 cylinder is at TDC. to obtain TDC for #1 cylinder, rotate the crankshaft one full revolution, this will move the camshaft sprocket timing mark to the top, #1 cylinder will be at TDC.
as i thought and a lot of other people to according to this poll that when the timing marks(on a 350 chev.) was dot to dot that was #1 cylinder tdc, but its #6. no big deal, just something to think about, might have a need to know one of these days.

this might not be the best place in the world for someone to get there timing info. I always check for tdc by blowing my finger off anyway, so i never used the dot to dot for anything other than a reference point to time the cam. but you could leave the dots there and put the dist in on #6 and it would be ok. most people thinks the rotor button has to be pointed a certain way in the cap, but it dont. i always get #1 comp. up and then put the rotor button where i wont it to be , not where the book tells me to, but the next guy that pull the wires off and dont know that might have a hard time getting it back in time. like you said streets, it don't matter at all what cylinder ya time the engine on.. as long as the plug wires are in the same firin' order sequence, and i say it dont matter where you put #1 in the cap as long as the plug wires are in the right firin' order sequence.Mike

Son, I know you're hell-bent-for-leather for someone to tell you that the motor will run great without degreeing it and being able to dial it in and optimize your combination....it might....and it might not.
Millions of motors have been assembled without degreeing the cam and changing the timing based on knowing where the timing is, but did they all run great, or did they just "run"?PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
