Timing a 350
I recently installed a new intake on make GM 350. When we tried to re-install the distributor we determined that it had been 180-ed out, so we did the best we could to retime it but never quite got it right. Since then my car runs terribly and I was wondering if someone could give me step by step instruction on how to re-time it properly. I'm sort of a beginner and would really appreciate the help, thanks. If it aint broke, don't fix it

Hey thanks a lot man. So if I've got this right, 1)Remove number one plug. 2)Wait for TDC on compression stroke. 3)Manually turn crank up to TDC on timing tab, which I believe to be 0. 4)Remove cap, make sure distributor is pointing to number one wire. (or close to anyways) 5)Replace cap, turn engine over, and bring distributor around until it runs best, and then bump it back a hair, and the timing should be correct? If it aint broke, don't fix it

Remove the #1 spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Turn the engine over by hand. When you feel pressure against your finger, you're coming up on #1 compression. When the timing mark aligns with the pointer, you're at #1 TDC. Once you've done that, set your distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire terminal. That gets you close. Crank the engine and move the distributor each way a bit, and it should start - assuming you have spark and fuel.
you left some of it out.Mike
