needs help with vavle tick
hey i have a 69 nova chevy 350 4 barrel carb running stock cast heads i just adjusted the vavles and it now makes less noise but theres still the loud tick and what i can only describe as a marble rolling around in a tin can.also when i hit the gas ( smash it down ) there car doesnt react fast enough almost sounds like its going to die i checked the plug and plug wires and all checked out ok im running 89 octane and i know the car runs alittle rich i recently replaced the header gaskets thinking i might have had a header leak but im certain its coming from the vavles anybody have any ideas im just about fed up with this motor

Sounds like a lifter, are they hydraulic?
Carb sounds like accelerator pump needs adjusting. It ain't broke if you can fix it.

vavle tick
hey my dog has a tick or two but he runs good! OK i had to say it try looking at the rockers arms they get worn in spots and go in and out of lash but hears the bad news you could have a rocker arm stud gone bad rocker arm is cutting in the side of the stud this makes a hell noise or press stud coming out

Is that the stock cam in there ? If a higher lift cam is installed, the extra lift can sometimes push out a rocker stud making the clearances open up therefor the tick or clack sound. Best cure with a higher lift cam is to install screw in studs, and to also check for spring coil bind.

stock cam
i dont think its stock but its very mild..just messing around with the plugs the other day and noticed when i pulled them all most of them were gapped around .30-.45 nothing was the correct gap. also the plugs on the passenger side were all very loose ( came out by hand) and on the driver side so tight i busted two. could this cause a knocking sound?..but back to my point when replacing the cam its recommended that i replace the lifters as well right?

Are you sure its the valves? Since you have them adjusted you mite be hearing something else like a worn out fuel pump which will sound and act the same way. If it's a stock pump there is a little hole on the side and when it starts to get weak it will sometimes start leaking.

its reccomended to change lifters when you change cam.... but not neccisary as long as the lifters are in decent condition.....
Thank you Roger. .
