carb or timing
Hey everyone!!!
I have 850 Q-jet edelbrock #1910 suppose to be calibrated 4 engines 500+ hp i am probably far from that. its a 406 rotating assembly 10.5 to 1 compression dart iron eagle heads 2.08 intake valves 230 cc runners 72 cc chambers cam is a comp roller extreme with intake 230 duration @ .050 236 exhaust @ .050 msd 6AL box limiter set at 6000. I think my timing is set at 20 dergrees base timing. I set it at idle 900 rpms with 20 deg. is this ok. Denny had a article from hot rod mag. or somthing that he posted about timing. Now for my prob. steady speeds it misses
foot in it, it clears up now when i take the load off and put in nuetral and rev it to 2000 rpm and hold it, it will start missing again and if i hold there it will continue to miss drop to about idle speed with that miss let of and it idles fine no miss or nothing.
When i mess with timing nothing changes.
confused

the engine has 30 miles on it maybe if that!!
the cap rotor and wires are all brand new premium fuel
filled this year!!!!
No O2 sensor
One other thing i put smaller jets in this carb and it got worse
hahaha maybe i should try going with bigger jets
sorry forgot to mention that but i just assume that the carb is too much anyway!!!

Just for kicks pull one of the rear plugs to check for gas soak. I aalso have a feeling the carb is too big for cruising.Choose your battles well===If it dont go chrome it

i left specs in first post its a intake is 230 @ .050 exhaust 236 @ .050 int. .510 exh. .520 centerline is 106
lobe seperation 110 its also a roller setup if that helps

ummm if you messed with the timing its prolly not that carb could be or even your distributer is the gear right on it?

yeah your probably haven a problem with that carb thats alot of carburation on a engine your not sure about if i was you id try to find somone with a carb you can borrow or get cheap and trow it on see what that does

autocity when i mess with the timing the only thing that changes is the idle note it acts the same at cruise. See the biggest prob.
I have is that the ignition and fuel delivery i have been told is that they act the same so i messed with the timing same ole.
i changed the jet from a 73 to a 68 that the next size down that i have it got worse but with the 73 its to rich out hte tail pipe

i was told to go to 75 jet and set my power valve screw down

if you've got a miss when the motor is loaded down it sounds like plug wires to me. a plug will brake down under load to. i'd check the plugs and plug rires a little closer.Mike

I think you may be too lean. With that lobe seperation you will smell nasty at the tail pipes due to the extra overlap. 850 is a little big on the carb but not too terribably large for your setup. Keep tinkering with those jets.
Thank you Roger. .
